After several years of doing research on renewable energy in the evenings after work, I was lucky enough to arrive at the concept of using a flexible reflector, hanging on its own weight to focus solar energy into useful levels. Such a reflector would take on the profile of the catenary curve, and is similar to a parabolic mirror within certain design parameters. I am certain that this is considered by others, so it is my hope to apply some rigorous engineering and mathematical analysis to the idea to bring it beyond "tinker" stage. After all, without math, physics would be just...a story.
I feel strongly that this concept has major merits in providing a much cheaper solar solution than most conventional designs. The applications I have envisioned range from portable heaters for cooking and water boiling in developing countries, to high end, high energy power generation.
At certain point in one's life (read: mid-life crisis), the value of minor monetary profit is not as high as the wish to leave a little piece of positive impact to the world. As such, I would like to offer up this idea in total to anyone who wants to apply it for the goodness of mankind.
